McDonald & Dodds isn’t returning to ITV (Picture: ITV)
ITV has cancelled McDonald & Dodds after four season and fans are furious.
The crime drama, which stars Tala Gouveita and Jason Watkins as mismatched duo DCI Lauren McDonald and DS Dodds solving crimes in Bath, won’t be returning for a fifth series, despite ending on a huge cliffhanger.
The most recent series saw McDonald seemingly accepting her partner’s proposal, with fans hoping for an epic wedding.
However, an ITV spokesperson told RadioTimes.com that ratings for the most recent series didn’t meet the broadcaster’s threshold to get recommissioned.
Not surprisingly, the news McDonald & Dodds is the latest ITV show to get the axe hasn’t gone down well with fans, who were desperate for more episodes.
‘I’m so sad and beyond disappointed! I loved the series and really enjoyed the chemistry and character development of both actors,’ wrote Reddit user @ikindalikekitkat. ‘I will miss them terribly. In honour of the show I will try to eat some chips with butter today.’
‘i’m so sick and tired of all the good shows getting cancelled,’ fumed @theclancinator1, while @ReasonablyBluh added: ‘Nooo…. I love this show! I’m very disappointed.’
And @geri-in-calif got right to the point, writing: ‘Not good news.’
Outnumbered star Claire Skinner and EastEnders’ Charlie Chambers regularly appeared as Chief Superintendent Mary Ormond and DC Samuel Goldie respectively, while there were whole host of guests.
Through the four series, there were appearances from everyone from Hugh Dennis, Martin Kemp and Alan Davies to John Thomson, Pixie Lott and Gavin & Stacey favourite Rob Brydon.
Other big names included Patsy Kensit, Bill Bailey, Kelvin Fletcher and Catherine Tyldesley.

Meanwhile, there’s some good news for McDonalds & Dodds fans, as Jason Watkins has been cast alongside Robson Green in new detective drama Catch You Later.
The series – which will be directed by Death In Paradise chief Toby Frow – is coming to Channel 5, and has been described as a ‘cat-and-mouse-thriller’.
Jason will play police detective Huw Miller in the show, which follows his character as he struggles with a case he failed to solve involving a stalker who toyed with his victims before killing them.

The synopsis reads: ‘As Huw attempts to settle into retirement, the case is never far from his mind – and when new neighbour Patrick Harbottle (Green) moves in and utters the chilling phrase “catch you later” – the sign-off the stalker used to taunt Huw during the investigation – Huw is determined he’s finally got his man.
‘What follows is a high stakes game of psychological chess between the two neighbours as Huw’s world begins to crumble around him.
‘Unable to bear the guilt of the stalker taking another victim under his nose, Huw risks everything to unearth the truth. But has he set his sights on the right man, or is his obsession pushing him ever closer to the brink?’
