TV fans have hailed Severance season 2 as a ‘true masterpiece’ as the drama finally returned after a three-year wait.

Apple TV Plus dropped the first episode of the sci-fi thriller’s latest instalment on Friday.

Severance follows office worker Mark (Adam Scott) and his team of employees who have opted to have their memories surgically divided between professional and personal life.

As Mark onboards his newly-severed colleague Helly (Britt Lower), his outside life begins to overlap with work when disturbing truths about his job at Lumon are uncovered.

Over the weekend, fans devoured the start of Severance season 2, with many declaring that ‘peak television’ had finally returned.

Among them was @dinmurdock, who declared on X: ‘What an opening scene.. this is a true masterpiece. #Severance.’

@realitysuckksx enthused: ‘Pure cinema if you ask me #severance.’

Although the plot for season two has largely been under lock and key, creator Dan Erickson teased a ‘dire’ fallout for our motley crew of workers.

He told Vanity Fair: ‘We very much wanted to put our heroes in a scarier place because season 1 ends with them poking the bear. They form this little rebellion, and they’re able to achieve a modicum of success with it.

‘But the question with season 2 was: “What happens when the bear pokes back? What’s the fallout of this victory that they had? I think, without giving much away, the fallout is dire”.’

Fans will be relieved that Severance’s director – Hollywood legend Ben Still – has already teased a third outing.

The show has also won critical acclaim – including 14 Emmys (Picture Apple TV/ Wilson Webb)

He told Collider: ‘You have a responsibility to the audience that you’re going somewhere with it. That’s always been a part of it for us, really understanding where it’s heading to, and Apple’s been really supportive of that and been sensitive to what the story is and not saying, “Okay, this is something that has to keep going as long as it’s successful.”

‘It should go as long as the story goes, and that’s something we have an idea of, and we’re working towards as we’re starting up our season three work.’

Severance has also been a critical success – with both seasons holding a 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Severance is available to stream on Apple TV Plus.
