Jeremy Clarkson has spoken candidly about his health, revealing the one item of food he cut out from his diet after receiving medical guidance.

In just a few days, the new series of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? is set to air on ITV1, which will see celebrities including Stephen Fry, Anton Du Beke, Steph McGovern and Louise Minchin take the hot seat in a bid to win money for charity.

Ahead of the launch of the latest season, Jeremy opened up about returning to the show for a seventh year, while also reflecting on changes he’s made in his life to improve his wellbeing.

In October last year, the 64-year-old revealed that he had been taken to hospital after experiencing symptoms including a ‘tightness in his chest’.

After being taken to a hospital in Oxford, he underwent an electrocardiogram, blood tests and X-rays before having a stent fitted, explaining that one of the arteries feeding blood to his heart was ‘completely blocked’.

In his interview ahead of the return of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?, Jeremy was asked how the ‘health kick’ was going.

Revealing that he was having a snack of celery and carrots – whereas in the past he’d have snacked on bacon – he said: ‘My phone flashed up this morning saying: “You are taking far fewer steps this week than last.” I thought, “Yeah I would be as I am sitting here” [recording the show].

‘It also says you are eating far fewer sausages. I just sit here and eat celery. I am feeling better on it. I do feel very well.’

The Clarkson’s Farm presenter was then asked if the recent health scare that he experienced gave him a ‘jolt’, to which he replied: ‘I had that when I had pneumonia, and I gave up smoking. This, you go, “Actually that’s it.”

‘I have been to see a dietician. The dietician has given me a pretty good list and said: “Don’t eat processed food.” If it’s got more than one ingredient in it, don’t eat it. I feel great.’

When he experienced his health scare last year, Jeremy revealed in his column for The Sunday Times that doctors had warned him that he had been ‘days away’ from his condition worsening.

Jeremy first joined WHo Wants To Be A Millionaire? in 2018, the quiz show that was previously hosted by Chris Tarrant from 1998 until 2014.

The former Grand Tour star outlined how he’s ‘genuinely loved’ the programme since it began 27 years ago, and so felt ‘very honoured’ to take over the hosting duties.

‘I like being busy and I love this show,’ he shared.

‘I am not making any of this up, I love hosting it. We have done three shows a day for what feels like quite some time now and I still get a thrill out of watching people’s faces when they know the answer, but they don’t think they do.’

He added whether the ‘Ask the Host’ lifeline, which only came into effect when he joined as presenter, had become easier over the years.

‘No, it’s still terrifying. This series I have been particularly hopeless,’ he admitted.

‘I was doing reasonably well on my average getting them right, but this series I have been really useless!’

Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? airs on Sunday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
