Fans of an acclaimed historical drama hailed a ‘masterpiece’ have mere days left to watch it before it’s removed from Amazon Prime Video.

Outlander, which was adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling book series, originally aired its first season in 2014.

The story follows World War Two medic Claire (Caitriona Balfe) who is transported 200 years into the past while honeymooning with her husband Frank (The Crown’s Tobias Menzies) and falls in love with a dashing Highlander, Jamie (Sam Heughan).

The mystical show set in both the 18th and 20th centuries has amassed a devoted fanbase over the years, with the eighth and final season expected to come out by the end of 2025.

But for UK viewers hoping to do rewatch it from the very beginning after season seven dropped this month – we have bad news.

Season one, which secured an impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, will no longer be available to watch with an Amazon Prime Video subscription from the end of January.

That means viewers have just a few days left to watch the first 16 episodes of the show before having to buy an additional MGM Plus subscription if they want to watch from the very start.

Seasons two to seven have already moved over to MGM Plus, so are only available to watch with the Prime add-on (coming in at a further £4.49 a month).

There has been plenty of praise for the show over the years, with fans dubbing it ‘addictive’, ‘excellent’ and ‘one of the best shows they’ve ever seen’.

‘YES, YES and YES! This show is superb! Every time a new season comes out I binge-watch it that weekend! One of my all-time favs!’ Rotten Tomatoes user HJ M wrote in a review.

‘What is there not to love? Amazing talented cast.!! Incredible chemistry between the two main lead actors, Sam, Heughan, and Caitriona Balfe. Gorgeous cinematography all taking place in Beautiful Scotland. what a story!!!’ user W. L echoed.

‘Love season one. Outlander is my favourite series. It’s so good. Watched it at least 10 times in the past four years,’ Lina D praised.

The latest season is set during the American Revolutionary War, with the final episode of season seven – which aired on January 17 – ending on a huge cliffhanger.

Scottish actor Sam has gained a reputation as a TV heartthrob for playing Jamie, even teasing Travis Kelce about stealing Taylor Swift away when she arrived in Edinburgh last year for her Eras Tour.

The show was confirmed for an eighth season in January 2023.

Kathryn Busby, president of original programming for Starz, said at the time, per Variety: ‘For nearly a decade Outlander has won the hearts of audiences worldwide and we’re pleased to bring Claire and Jamie’s epic love story to a proper conclusion.

‘But before we close this chapter there is plenty of their passionate story to tell over the course of 26 new episodes and even more to explore of this dynamic world and its origin story.’

This piece was originally published on January 14 2025.

Outlander season one will leave Prime Video by the end of January 2025. All seven seasons will then be available to watch on MGM Plus through a subscription.
