Leo Woodall has already won fans over as a mathematical genius caught up in a conspiracy in Apple TV Plus’ new thriller, Prime Target – and it’s not even been released yet.

The 28-year-old British actor – who had a stellar 2024 after gaining global acclaim for his role as Dex in Netflix’s adaptation of One Day – is starring opposite Quintessa Swindell in Prime Target, which will drop on the streamer tomorrow.

Leo’s 2025 is shaping up well, as he kicks it off with the exciting new action drama, created by Sherlock writer Steve Thompson.

The trailer starts with maths prodigy and Cambridge student Edward Brooks (Leo) sharing his groundbreaking theory on prime numbers which makes him question if ‘we’re not in control’.

Despite demands to drop this research from his professor, Brooks shows no signs of quitting as he begins to uncover a government conspiracy that causes malevolent figures to descend upon our plucky protagonist.

After active threats to his life, he is tracked down by NSA agent Taylah (Quintessa) who reveals that his work is the ‘cornerstone to all digital security’.

Now the ‘world’s greatest mind’ has the key that could plunge the whole world into chaos and a ‘target number one’ sign on his back as he dodges the forces that be, including Martha Plimpton as top dog Jane Torres.

Cue high-stake chases, knife fights and an unlikely alliance ready to ‘burn it all to hell’. Think a Dan Brown thriller meets John Wick. Or perhaps Good Will Hunting meets Jason Bourne.

The official synopsis for the eight-episode show reads: ‘A brilliant young math postgraduate, Edward Brooks, is on the verge of a major breakthrough. If he succeeds in finding a pattern in prime numbers, he will hold the key to every computer in the world.

‘Soon, he begins to realize an unseen enemy is trying to destroy his idea before it’s even born, which throws him into the orbit of Taylah Sanders, an NSA agent (Swindell) who’s been tasked with watching and reporting on mathematicians’ behaviour.

‘Together, they start to unravel the troubling conspiracy Edward is at the heart of.’

The premise gives Good Will Hunting (GWH) vibes – the 1997 tear-jerking drama starring Robin Williams and Matt Damon, who plays the ultimate maths whiz.

Let’s see if this one lives up to GWH’s 97% Rotten Tomatoes score…

There is plenty of excitement online as this marks Leo’s first big project since his starring turn in One Day.

‘It’s giving Da Vince Code and National Treasure teas whilst also screaming this one’s for the mathematicians who love a good conspiracy thriller. Here for it!,’ @itsrewritten posted on X.

The screen star is in the mix of actors touted to potentially take over from Daniel Craig in the next movie of the long-running action franchise.

But there’s plenty of competition for the role with actors such as Aaron Taylor-Johnson, James Norton and Rege-Jean Page all hot on his heels when it comes to speculation.

Meanwhile, it’s proving to be a high-profile month for Apple TV Plus who are also gearing up for the imminent release of Severance season two.

The $200,000,000 sci-fi thriller has been hailed by critics as a modern-day masterpiece.

The first two episodes of Prime Target arrive on Apple TV Plus on January 22. Episodes then air weekly.
