A animated series has changed the name of a character over concerns it’s a slur (Picture: Nickelodeon
The latest spin-off of a noughties animated series has changed the name of a character following concerns it could be considered offensive.
First airing in 2001, The Fairly OddParents followed the adventures of Timmy Turner, a 10-year-old boy with two fairy godparents named Cosmo and Wanda who grant him wishes to solve his everyday problems.
It began with a series of shorts on Nickelodeon’s animation showcase Oh Yeah! Cartoons that aired from 1998, before the concept was green lit to be turned into a half-hour series.
The show initially ended in 2006 after airing 80 episodes across five seasons but was revived two years later.
However, it was then put on ice in 2018 before a live-action spin-off series, The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder, it screens in 2022.

Now, a sequel series, titled The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish, has also been released.
The character, now known as Peri, first appeared in a 2008 episode of The Fairly OddParents (Picture: Nickelodeon)
But in a new episode of the show, it’s been revealed that that the son of Cosmo and Wanda – named Poof – is no more.
The character now goes by a new name, with one of the show’s developers explaining it was done so for a very particular reason.
In a post on social media, series writer-producer-star Ashleigh Crystal Hairston wrote: ‘The former name is a slur in many countries and cannot be used.’
Peri serves as the fairy godparent for Dev Dimmadome, a new character who is the grandson of Doug Dimmadome from the original series.
In the episode, he introduces himself with a dramatic entrance.
The original series has since been followed by two spin-offs (Picture: Nickelodeon)
‘Hey kid, I’m Poof — or at least I was. I changed my name to Peri, like Peri-winkle,’ he said.
The original Fairly OddParents first introduced the character in 2008 as a baby who was the first fairy baby born in thousands of years.
A New Wish follows Cosmo and Wanda as they come out of retirement to watch over a new godchild, Hazel Wells, who is voiced by Hairston.
The franchise is Nickelodeon’s second longest-running animated show, behind SpongeBob SquarePants, which has been running since 1999.
Fairly OddParents: A New Wish is streaming on Netflix.
