Sir Rod Stewart’s first marriage ended with a little help from Friends icon David Schwimmer but the singer has absolutely no clue.

While Sir Rod celebrated his 80th birthday in style, the sitcom legend awkwardly revealed how he once served him divorce papers.

Before his big break in 1994, David worked ‘so many jobs’ to pay his way through university, he told Stephen Colbert on The Late Show.

The future star was helping out at his mum’s legal firm in the 80s and dished out papers to unsuspecting people, both famous and otherwise.

‘One summer after my freshman year in college, I was just looking for work,’ he shared. ‘And my mum said, “Well, you can be a process server for me”.

‘So I was the guy who would pop out of the bushes and serve you divorce papers.’

David, 58, was rather enthusiastic about this role at just 18, saying he was ‘like James Bond’.

The Goosebumps star continued: ‘I’m not James Bond! ‘Cause you’re tipped off as to where they might be.’

‘Once… thank goodness I’ve never run into him since,’ David confessed. ‘But I served Rod Stewart. I don’t even know if he knows. I don’t think he knows.’

Sir Rod divorced his first wife, actress and model Alana Stewart, in 1984 after four years and two children together.

He then tied the knot with model Rachel Hunter in 1990, splitting in 1999 but the divorce was not finalised until 2006 — the year before he married his current wife Penny Lancaster in 2007.

The Late Show host joked that the Maggie May legend ‘knows now’ to which David nervously laughed and said ‘he’s not here is he?’

‘You could theoretically run into Rod Stewart some time and now he knows to punch you,’ added Stephen, 60.

David also revealed he worked briefly as a rollerskating waiter in Chicago, saying he was ‘great’ and ‘excellent’ as he and Stephen hyped up their former careers.

After this divorce server role, it would be 10 years before Friends first aired and made David a household name.

He was 28 when the show began in 1994, running for 10 seasons until the finale episode, The Last One, aired on May 6, 2004.

Meanwhile, Sir Rod has continued to be one of the biggest icons of British music and is set to play Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage this year.

His Glastonbury appearance comes as he confirmed the end of ‘large-scale world tours’, instead opting for ‘smaller venues and more intimacy’.
