The new Martin Clunes drama Out There starts on ITV tonight – featuring the former Doc Martin star as a farmer in small-town Wales who becomes caught up in a web of criminal violence.

Martin, 63, stars as farmer Nathan Williams, whose quaint country way of life is threatened when a drug cartel begins operating in his small provincial town.

Concerned dad Nathan becomes drawn into a dark world of county lines drug dealing when his teenage son, Johnny, becomes involved.

Determined to protect his home, his family and his legacy, Nathan arms up to protect his way of life.

It’s a change of pace for the actor, perhaps best known for his comedic roles in Men Behaving Badly, Doc Martin and Goodbye Mr. Chips, but we’re sure he’s up to the job.

What is Out There about and is there a trailer?

Produced in association with Creative Wales, the series was filmed entirely on location in Wales.

‘We were thrilled to have the support of Creative Wales to produce Out There in my home country. We were able to explore beautiful and rarely seen areas around the Black Mountains and to use local talent for our cast and crew,’ said co-writer Marc Evans.

The show sees Nathan tackle the issue of ‘county lines’ drug running – in which ruthless criminals coerce young and vulnerable people into working as drug runners and dealers.

Is Out There based on a true story?

The issues it covers may have their basis in reality, but Out There is not based on a true story.

For the series, Martin reunited with Manhunt creators Marc Evans and Ed Whitmore. In doing so, they thoroughly researched the criminal underworld upon which the story is based.

‘We researched the whole county lines problem with Marc and Ed . While this is a work of fiction the way that business model works is represented accurately because the research was so thorough,’ said Martin, in a press release for ITV.

Speaking about the show’s darker tone, Martin told Metro and other press: ‘It’s not that they just sit down and grieve all the time, there is moments of light because that’s how it is in real life.’

He continued: ‘Men can feel like they have to just carry on, and my character does plough on.

‘I remember when my dad died when I was eight and the advice was “You’re the man of the house now and you’ve got to be grown up”. I was still wetting the bed, but never mind.’

Out There airs at 9pm tonight on ITV1. All six episodes are also available for streaming on ITVX now.
